This is really good -- I would very much like to know what tools you used to render this. I'm a fairly inexperienced artist, and I don't know much about which pens and pencils are best for certain effects.

I use soft graphite because you can get a nice variation in the strength of the line. I generally use 4b & 6b. 8b is a little too soft for me and skips over the paper grain. The fish wanted a crosshatch effect instead of a smooth gradient for some reason, so that's what it got.
And we're all inexperienced, and experienced. Don't worry about what you don't know. Just ask lots of questions and do what feels right. You might just end up breaking a new path.
